Information:
The human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), also known as respiratory syncytial virus or simply RSV, is a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus from the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes common respiratory viruses such as those that cause measles and mumps. RSV causes respiratory tract infections in patients of all ages and is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections during infancy and early childhood. In temperate climates, it causes annual epidemics during the winter months. In tropical climates, infection is more common during the rainy season. In the United States, 60% of children are infected during their first RSV season, and nearly all children will have been infected by the age of 2 or 3. Natural RSV infection does not provide lasting immunity, and reinfections are common. Sometimes a child may develop symptomatic infections more than once during the same RSV season. Recently, there has been a significant increase in RSV cases among older adults.
