The GNB3 gene encodes the beta 3 subunit of heterotrimeric G-proteins, which are key components of intracellular signal transduction between receptors and intracellular effectors virtually in all cells of the body. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs5443 (C825T), located on exon 10 of the GNB3 gene identified as associated with obesity, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. A associatión with postgestational obesity was also found. Women with rs5443(T;T) genotype gain significantly more weight during pregnancy than rs5443(C;T) or rs5443(C;C) women, and had a significantly higher pre-pregnancy body mass index.
