Reference limits:
Newborns: 0- 6 hours: 2.0 ng/mL
6 to 12 hors: 8.0 ng/mL
12 to 18 hours: 15.0 ng/mL
18-30 hours: 21 .0 ng/mL
30-36 hours: 15.0 ng/mL
36-42 hours: 8.0 ng/mL
42-48 hours : 2.0 ng/mL
From 48 hours and adults: up to 0.05 ng/mL
Interpretation of results:
Diagnosis of sepsis/systemic bacterial infection:
· Procalcitonin <0.5 ng/mL: Not likely a systemic infection (sepsis)
· Procalcitonin between 0.5 and 2 ng/mL: Is a systemic infection (sepsis)
· Procalcitonin between 2 and 10 ng/mL: There is probably a systemic infection (sepsis)
· Procalcitonin> 10 ng/mL: Important systemic inflammatory reaction due almost exclusively to severe bacterial sepsis or septic shock.
Differential diagnosis of infection of the lower respiratory tract:
· Procalcitonin <0.1 ng/mL: Absence of bacterial infection
· Procalcitonin between 0.1 and 0.25 ng/mL: Unlikely bacterial infection
· Procalcitonin between 0.25 and 0.5 ng/mL: Possible bacterial infection
· Procalcitonin> 0.5 ng/mL: Probable presence of bacterial infection
