Oxcarbazepine is a chiral prodrug that is metabolized to 10-Hydroxycarbazepine,known commonly as monohydrosucarbamazepine, the metabolite responsible for the therapeutic effect. Oxcarbazepine is rapidly and completely absorbed, with a peak concentrations observed at 1 to 2 hours. The half-life os oxcarbazepine is approximately 2 hours. Concentrations of monohydroxycarbazepine peak at 3 to 5 hours, and the elimination halflife is 8 to 15 hours. Draw specimen immediately before next scheduled dose.
