CHROMIUM, END WORKING DAY URINE

Clarifications on Changes in Reference Values for Chromium in Urine

The biological limit value and the timing of sample collection for chromium in urine has chenged at the current occupational regulation. Until now, the exposure index has been reported as an increase in concentration between the beginning of the workday urine sample (code 8505 – CROITC) and the end of the workday urine sample at the end of the workweek (code 298 – CRO), with the following structure and limit values:

Chromium in urine (start of workday) µg/L
Chromium in urine (end of workday) µg/L
VLB (INSHT 2023) End of workweek For Chromium (VI), water-soluble fumes: 25.0 µg/L
Workday Increment: 10.0 µg/L

According to the guide "Professional Exposure Limits for Chemical Agents in Spain - INSST (2024)," the biological limit value for chromium in urine at the end of the workday is indicated by a single sample taken at the end of the workweek, with the following value:

Chromium in urine at the end of the workday µg/L
Exposure to Chromium (VI) compounds: BLV (INSST) in urine at the end of the workweek: Less than 7.5 µg/L

Consequently, the determination of chromium in urine at the start of the workday (8505 – CROITC) will be permanently discontinued, and only the concentration value of chromium in urine at the end of the workday (298 – CRO) will be reported.
