Clarifications on Changes in Reference Values for Nickel in Urine
According to the new occupational regulations there is an update regarding the units of biological limit values for nickel.
Until now, the exposure index has been reported based on the calculation of nickel concentration with creatinine in urine (code 550 - NIQO), following the structure below:
Creatinine in urine at end of workday g/L
Nickel in urine at end of workday (concentration) µg/L
Nickel in urine at end of workday µg/g
According to the ACGIH - American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, the biological exposure index for nickel in urine at the end of the workday is expressed in units of concentration, without considering the calculation with creatinine, as follows:
Nickel in urine at end of workday µg/L
Exposure to elemental nickel and insoluble nickel compounds
BEI (ACGIH) in urine at end of workweek: Less than 5 µg/L
Exposure to soluble nickel compounds
BEI (ACGIH) in urine at end of workweek: Less than 30 µg/L
Consequently, only the concentration value of nickel analyzed will be reported.
Test code: 550
Previous mnemonic code: NIQO
New mnemonic code: NIOC
